Watering Garden Plants Effectively
Watering garden plants can be a bit mystifying at times. How much is too much, and how much is not enough? In this article I will cover some things on watering garden plants effectively, so that your garden thrives.
First of all, everyone most likely knows this one, but don’t water your plants in the middle of the day. Heat is at it’s highest, and the water is mostly evaporated before it’s utilized effectively. Also avoid watering garden plants when it is windy, for the same reasons.
Next, remember to only water targeted areas. Don’t drench your plants, as you can and will drown the poor things. Most of the time, focusing your watering efforts right around the soil of the roots is the best target area.
Also, to help develop deep and healthy root systems, water thoroughly, but less frequently. Collecting rainwater is an excellent way of watering garden plants as well. This is a great option in conjunction with using a watering can. Not only are you targeting the areas your plant needs water the most, you are conserving water, when utilizing rainwater which is full of healthy nutrients your plants need to grow!
An alternative option to everyday maintenance and watering garden plants, is something called storing crystals. Storing crystals have been used effectively by farmers and garden centers alike. These free flowing, white polymer granules can hold up to 400 times their weight in water, and when immersed converts to a gel like substance that crystallizes. Plants can then penetrate the granules with feeder roots that are naturally drawn to reservoirs of water.
Not only can you reduce wasteful water use, but farm production yields who have used these crystals have increased by as much as 150%. Garden centers use it to increase the shelf life of their plants and seedlings, and instead of you watering garden plants daily, you can now use the crystals too!
