Garden Planning- Choosing Your Plants
Now that we have covered garden planning a bit, and have chosen what kind of garden we’d like to plant, now we need to choose what kind of flowers or veggies we want to grow. If you are choosing to grow a garden for pleasure, and not food, there are some basics you should definitely cover.
Firstly, look at some foundation plantings such as small trees and shrubs. Plant these around the edge of your home as they help to soften the transition from house to garden to yard. Choose trees or shrubs that look good year round and don’t have the potential to grow too large for the space you are allocating them.
Make sure to plant them in such a way that they can’t damage your home or damage the foundation via their roots. Secondly, when garden planning, consider trees. Again, choose trees that are hale and hardy year round, and consider whether they are very “fruitful”. IE: Will they cause a yard full of litter from shedding their blossoms or leaves?
Next, look at shrubs. Shrubs are great for creating low maintenance borders, but again you have to look at particular characteristics, and decide if those characteristics are something you can deal with on a regular basis. Garden planning boils down to preferences, and how much work you are willing to put in to maintain it.
Finally, when garden planning you want to look at ground cover, vines, perennials and annuals. Perennials and annuals are a great way to add color to your garden, and ground cover is excellent way to reduce your maintenance issues. Vines of course, can both add color and dimension to your garden, by offering vertical visual stimuli.
Now obviously, when garden planning, this much thought doesn’t quite go into growing herbs or veggies. So, if those are your passion, just choose herbs and veggies that you already like to eat and use. Make sure to do a bit a research and ascertain that your climate is suitable for growing whichever types you are looking to grow, and then take a short trip to your local nursery.
In most cases when garden planning, your local nursery can really offer you some helpful guidance and advice on how and what to grow, as well as point you in the right direction for all supplies you will need. Now get busy and plan that garden!
